First International Conference “European Values in Ukrainian Education: Challenges and Perspectives” held under Erasmus+ Jean Monnet Module “European Values in Literary Arts” (599918-ЕРР-1-2018-1-UA-EPPJMO-MODULE EUVOLIA) was meant to consider the matter of European values from various points of view. The keynote panel session “European Values in Ukraine: Challenges of Communication” gathered 5 prominent speakers from Sweden, UK and Ukraine, as well as 78 participants, in a fruitful discussion over various means of communicating values – be it translation, everyday slang, news or curriculum design.
The session moderated by EUVOLIA co-coordinator Olena Tupakhina was opened by Dr. Maksym Strikha, a well-known Ukrainian translator, ex-Deputy Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine. Dr. Strikha provided a thoughtful overview of gradual transformations of Ukrainian identity acquiring its own voice, as reflected in translation.
Dr. Roman Horbyk from Södertörn University (Sweden), in his turn, pondered over the very meaning of Europe as a concept for Ukrainian mentality and social discourse from 1500-ies till present.
Head of OSCE mission in Serbia, Dr. Kyron Reed (UK) considered language and literature (specifically, the case of Shakespeare as a center of European canon) as means to separating and uniting nations and cultures.
Dr. Lada Kolomiets from Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University (Ukraine) raised a burning issue of preventing manipulations done though the “neo-Imperial newspeak” of the Russian media.
Dr. Rusudan Makhachashvili and Ivan Semenist from Kyiv Borys Grynchenko University (Ukraine) collected unique empirical data to identify the set of skills required by future specialists in the field of Humanities to successfully integrate into European values dimension.
